Growing a coffee tree at home is a fun and rewarding experience, and we will show you how to do it. It takes some time and patience, as a coffee tree usually produces fruit in its third or fourth year, but you can get about half a kilogram of beans from one plant. You can find coffee seeds at most garden centers.
Here are the steps to grow a successful coffee tree at home:
- Germination of Grains: Start by soaking the coffee beans in aloe juice for 12 hours. Make the juice by mixing one part of crushed aloe leaf with one or two parts of water. Keep the soaked beans in a dark place, because light can reduce the effect of aloe.
- Container and Substrate Preparation: Choose a plastic tray, a bucket with a lid, or pots to plant the coffee beans. You can use a ready-made substrate for lemons, mixed with sand, or a mix of garden soil, sand, and azalea soil in equal parts. Clean the soil with a weak solution of manganese or boiling water if you use garden soil.
- Planting Grains: Plant the coffee beans 1-1.5 cm deep in the substrate, with the “broken” side facing down. This side will grow into the roots of the coffee tree. Wet the substrate well before planting; you don’t need to water more after planting.
- Crop Care: Make sure to air the plants regularly (at least twice a day) and keep the soil moist. If the soil gets dry, water it well. The beans should sprout in one and a half months on a sunny windowsill at temperatures between +20°C to +25°C.
- Seedling Transplantation: After two to three months of sprouting, move the seedlings to separate pots. Use pots with drainage holes and put a layer of expanded clay and a layer of sand at the bottom.
- Transplantation Process: Gently take out the coffee seedling with some soil from its old pot and put it in the new pot. Don’t use any fertilizer for at least two months after moving. Water the plant well after moving, until water comes out of the drainage hole.
Enjoy this coffee-growing adventure, and in a few years, you will taste the delicious harvest from your own coffee tree.
